Today’s weather at Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials’ Dressage Day 2 may be a rinse and repeat of yesterday, but as is often the case with big 4-star fields the best horses are often seen on Friday, particularly the afternoon. The shake up in the leaderboard has already started with one half of eventing’s power couple [Tim Price] knocking Niklas Bschorer out of 3rd when scoring 38.7 on Ringwood Sky Boy. Mark Todd on Leonidas II, one of the horses he will be keeping as he reduces his string, also dropped into the top 10 and heads off to Cross Country on a score of 41.7.
Grey horses were in abundance this morning too, and Jock Paget made his return to Burghley on Shady Grey (Andrew Nicholson’s previous ride). They made a few mistakes that raised a sharp intake of breath from today’s much larger crowd but with some nice changes, they managed to finish on 48.3, placing them just outside the top 20.
It was great to see Rudolphe Scherer again, and on such good form, scoring 45.0 on the lovely grey MAKARA DE MONTIEGE.
One of two brothers competing here this year is Warren Lamperd, riding the wonderful grey mare Silvia. They left the arena with 50.5 to carry forward to the cross country tomorrow. Based near Newbury Warren is a popular trainer, I often seen down at the Boomerang Cross Country Schooling Fields running clinics for all levels. Warren’s brother Murray rode Under The Clocks here yesterday to score 50.3, which leaves the two of them alongside one another on the leaderboard.
American, Laine Ashker, made her Burghley debut this morning scoring 48.8. Her horse, Anthony Patch is something of a veteran at 16 with plenty of form at Advanced level, and an American National Champion. Laine is something of social media sensation too, so follow her on twitter or instagram where you’ll find plenty of behind the scenes photos and an insight into the life of this vivacious four star all star.
There are plenty more to look forward to this afternoon, so I’ll be back with more later. Until then here are the important links for the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2015:
